Perhaps a dynamic programming “knapsack problem”, or “drunken walk”? Or truly I should say got intimidated by his way of presenting algorithms. Many programmers think that he has wrongly titled his book as “The Art of Computer Programming”, though I don't agree with them. I remember, in the discreet math class, learning about algorithms that were, in effect, practical uses of math for programmers. Any fun algorithm practice problems you've found? Since the emerging of Hadoop implementation, I have been trying to morph existing algorithms from various areas into the map/reduce model. Divided into two parts the first covers programming basic tasks using Java. This gentle introduction to programming and algorithms has been designed as a first course for undergraduates, and requires no prior knowledge. As per my opinion, if you like K&R2, you will like Practical Common Lisp and if you like HtDP, you will never like K&R2 and Practical Common Lisp but you may like Introduction to Algorithms. A simple algorithm based on an old dynamic programming concept provides an effective and practical approach to such problems.
